The Sovereignty and Judgment of God

How does a holy God deal with a compromised people? In 2 Kings 8, the narrative shifts gears, taking us out of the immediate miracles of Elisha and into the sweeping political and spiritual realities of Israel and Judah. Throughout this chapter, we see a fascinating interplay between God’s meticulous care for individuals and His sovereign hand over the rise and fall of nations.

We begin with the heartwarming return of the Shunammite woman, whose faithfulness is rewarded by the sovereign timing of God. But the chapter quickly turns to dark and sobering history: Hazael’s brutal rise to power in Aram/Syria, and the spiritual rot infecting Judah through the wicked influence of Ahab’s household.
