Digging Ditches

What do you do when the path of obedience leads you into a desert with no water? In 2 Kings 3, three kings form an alliance to go to war, only to find themselves stranded in the wilderness of Edom, staring down a slow death by dehydration.

In their desperation, they turn to the prophet Elisha. God’s response through Elisha is both a physical test and a profound spiritual lesson: "Make this valley full of ditches." This week, we examine how God tests our faith not by giving us the solution up front, but by calling us to prepare the ground for the blessing He is about to send.

The Right Response to Trials: When faced with a trial, Jehoshaphat shows us the right way to respond. That is to seek and trust God and turn towards Him.

The Call for Obedient Faith: God often requires obedient preparation before He sends supernatural provision. We need to "dig ditches" to lay some groundwork in preparation of the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

The Danger of Assumption: We see twice in this chapter where assumptions lead to failures. When we assume we already know the truth, we often see no reason to ask God for direction.
